Crete is not just an island, it could easily be a small country on its own. The variety of landscapes, flaura and fauna offers unlimited possibilities to explore; and the mild climate makes it attractive for visiting any time of the year. There are also several - inhabited or not - small islands around.

Exactly, a small country on its own. In 1896 until 1913 Crete there was autonomous Cretan State.
