Rhodes (also known as Rodos) is the largest and historically most significant island of the Dodecanese archipelago, sitting proudly as an epic crossroads of civilizations in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Renowned by its ancient moniker "The Island of the Sun," it enjoys an incredible density of sunny days. This beautiful setting hosts an immense timeline of history that spans from ancient Greece to the crusader era. The crowning jewel of the island is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Medieval City of Rhodes, a spectacularly well-preserved stronghold built by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century. Walking through the monumental stone gates leads visitors directly onto the cobblestones of the Street of the Knights Hospitaller and straight toward the imposing towers of the Gothic-style Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, an urban museum masterpiece illustrating the island's strategic weight during the Crusades.
Beyond its medieval capital, Rhodes stretches into a diverse world of whitewashed fishing villages, historic acropolises, and vibrant holiday shores. Fifty kilometers south sits the postcard-perfect settlement of Lindos, where a maze of traditional captain's houses draped in bougainvillea sits quietly under the dramatic, cliffside Acropolis of Lindos. Here, hikers can marvel at the 4th-century BC Temple of Athena Lindia while gazing down at the spectacular, shallow blue waters of St. Paul's Bay below. For family-friendly excursions or natural wonders, visitors can journey inland to explore the green canopy of the Valley of the Butterflies or see the natural springs of Epta Piges. From the expansive sands of Tigaki Beach and the windsurfing waves of Prasonisi to the mineral-rich waters of Kallithea Springs, Rhodes beautifully pairs historical exploration with classic Mediterranean seaside relaxation
