Separated from the northern tip of Karpathos by a narrow, 100-meter-wide sea strait, Saria is a rugged, volcanic island that captures the raw, untamed spirit of the Aegean. Millions of years ago, Saria was physically connected to Karpathos before seismic shifts and erosion carved them apart. Today, this uninhabited 20-square-kilometer islet serves as a time capsule scattered with centuries of human history. Visitors arriving by excursion boats from the ports of Pigadia or Diafani are greeted by an imposing landscape of steep, barren cliffs, deep gorges, and pristine pebble shores like Palatia Beach.
What makes Saria truly mystifying is how its silent ruins coexist with a thriving ecosystem. Known historically as an ancient city-state called Saros and later as a fortified stronghold for 15th-century Saracen pirates, the island features unique dome-roofed medieval stone houses and early Christian basilicas that are free to explore. Now reclaimed by nature, Saria is a strictly protected Natura 2000 wilderness area. Its jagged sea caves provide a rare sanctuary for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, while its rocky crags act as a crucial migratory nesting ground for rare birds of prey like Eleonora's falcons.
