Gavdos - Γαύδος

Gavdos is a wild, sun-drenched triangle of rock, sand, and ancient juniper trees floating in the middle of the Libyan Sea. Holding the legendary title of the southernmost inhabited point of Europe, this remote 30-square-kilometer island sits about 32 nautical miles south of mainland Crete and is geographically closer to Africa than it is to Athens. Steeped in ancient mythology, scholars frequently identify Gavdos as the mythical Ogygia, the island where the beautiful nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven long years. Today, the island completely shuns modern, multi-story commercialization. With fewer than 100 permanent residents spread out among tiny hill settlements like Kastri and Vatsiana, life moves entirely at the whim of nature, the wind, and sporadic ferry arrivals from the southern ports of Crete.

What makes Gavdos an unforgettable bucket-list destination is its primitive, untouched landscape and its magnetic pull for free spirits, off-grid campers, and modern-day nomads. The island boasts exceptional, world-class beaches like Agios Ioannis—frequently named among the most beautiful beaches on Earth—where sand dunes roll right into deep turquoise waters, shaded by rare cedar and juniper trees. The primary pilgrimage on the island is a scenic, 5-mile trek from Korfos Bay down to the rocky sea arches of Cape Tripiti. At the absolute edge of the European continent, local artists and a famous commune of Russian scientists constructed a monumental, 3-meter-high wooden chair atop the cliffside, inviting travelers to climb up, peer into the vast blue horizon, and experience the ultimate feeling of complete, unhindered freedom.

Maybe the feeling that Europe ends here, maybe the endless quiet beaches, the scenery, the footpaths, the sunset from the lighthouse that regains his old glory ...
