Lefkada (Lefkas) - Λευκάδα

Lefkada, unique among the Ionian islands, is connected to the Greek mainland by a 50-meter floating swing bridge, making it the only island you can easily drive to. This geographical perk blends seamless accessibility with a raw, dramatic island personality defined by towering white limestone cliffs and lush, green landscapes. The lively capital, Lefkada Town, welcomes visitors with its colorful, earthquake-resistant wooden-framed houses, a pedestrian-friendly marina, and the historic 14th-century Agia Mavra castle. Beyond the town, the island transitions into a world-class playground for outdoor enthusiasts, where the massive, wind-swept bays of Vassiliki and Agios Ioannis attract windsurfers and kitesurfers from across the globe.
The true calling card of Lefkada, however, is its spectacular western coastline, which features some of the most dramatic beaches in Europe. World-famous shores like Porto Katsiki and Egremni are framed by sheer, vertical white cliffs that drop violently into a sea of an almost unbelievable, milky-turquoise color. This striking neon hue is caused by the underwater limestone dust reflecting the bright Mediterranean sunlight. After a day on the coast, visitors can retreat into the island’s mountainous spine to explore traditional stone villages like Karya, famous for its intricate, hand-woven embroidery, or visit the tranquil Dimosari Waterfalls near Nydri. In the evenings, seaside tavernas serve local delicacies like Eglouvi lentils, air-dried Lefkaditiko salami, and fresh seafood, offering a perfect blend of adventure and traditional Greek island charm.
