Kimolos - Κίμωλος

Kimolos is a dreamlike, slow-paced paradise in the southwestern Cyclades, often affectionately called the "Chalk Island" due to its rich volcanic geology and abundant deposits of brilliant white clay. This tiny, understated gem sits just a short 30-minute ferry ride across a narrow channel from its larger neighbor, Milos, yet it feels entirely removed from the modern tourist trail. Life on Kimolos flows peacefully around its single, picture-perfect village, Chorio, where elegant white cubist houses are decorated with blue doors and climbing bougainvillea. Instead of crowded souvenir shops, visitors walking the quiet stone alleys encounter local residents sitting on their doorsteps, community-run open-air book boxes tucked into ancient walls, and the ruins of a 16th-century fortified medieval Castle (Kastro) standing at the village center.

The coastline of Kimolos is a magnificent natural showcase, carved into unique geological shapes and filled with incredibly clear, turquoise waters. The island's signature landmark is Skiadi, a giant, stone mushroom-shaped monument sculpted out of the volcanic rock by centuries of passing winds. Along the shores, beach lovers can relax at Prassa Beach, world-renowned for its unique, blindingly white volcanic sand and bright turquoise sea that resembles an exotic Caribbean lagoon. Other pristine spots include the soft sands of Aliki, Bonatsa, and the fishing village of Goupa, where traditional boat garages (syrmata) are carved directly into the colorful seaside rock. In the evenings, the island's small tavernas come alive with low-key warmth, serving up local culinary specialties like ladenia (a delicious, flatbread pizza topped with fresh tomatoes, olive oil, and onions) and pirenian (cheese-filled pies), offering an unforgettable masterclass in authentic, traditional Cycladic hospitality.
