Crete - Κρήτη

Crete is not just an island, it could easily be a small country on its own. The variety of landscapes, flaura and fauna offers unlimited possibilities to explore; and the mild climate makes it attractive for visiting any time of the year. There are also several - inhabited or not - small islands around.

Is the largest and most populated island in Greece, is a sprawling Mediterranean universe where thousands of years of ancient history crash against some of the most diverse natural landscapes in Europe. As the legendary birthplace of Zeus and the cradle of Europe's oldest Bronze Age society, the Minoan civilization, the island acts as a massive open-air museum.

Along its vast 650-mile coastline, Crete boasts a legendary collection of beaches that consistently rank among the world's best. Beyond its natural and historical scales, the true spirit of the island is found in Cretan hospitality and its world-renowned culinary culture. Fiercely independent and proud of their traditions, local mountain villagers still play the high-energy Cretan lyra at dusk, welcoming travelers to tables laden with the famous Cretan diet—including fresh dakos (barley rusks topped with ripe tomatoes, olive oil, and mizithra cheese), slow-cooked mountain lamb, wild greens, and smooth tsikoudia (raki) spirit.

  1. Exactly, a small country on its own. In 1896 until 1913 Crete there was autonomous Cretan State.
